LL Wolf 1964 72 Journal August 26 Guernavaca, Morelos to 5 mi. N Tlaxiengo, Mexico, Mexico 7700 eff. Up at 0:00. Drove out to Loma de Lobos when had breakfast as it was beginning to get light. Dick went out collecting while I tried some playback experiments using "fzut" calls of Amospita ruficanda laurencei to test their effect on A. ruficanda accumalata & groups reacted positively & were attracted to recorders. Only two approached closer than 10 feet + one bird sat on recorder. One of a pair attacked the specimen of A.o. laurencei that I had put in brush near recorder & went to ground when model fell & continued peeling. Dick returned with 11 birds + we spent until 12:30 preparing skins. Drove back into Cuernavaca when had car worked on + went to market. Left town for Taxco at 1400. At Taxco played tourists in a silver shop. Then drove back 14 miles toward Cuernavaca where picked up Hwy 55 north to Toluca. Outside of Tlaxiengo de la Sal & north in windy fields + sitting on fences saw Botteris Sparrows. Dick collected + Scelopuses from roadcut bank several miles north of Tlaxiengo. Found small road just off hwy & drove back in 100+ yds where camped for night. Wrote notes, had supper, + to bed at 1930. August 27 Swi.N.Tlaxiengo, Mexico to Zamora, Michoacan, Mexico Up at 0545. In the fields - overgrown, wooded patches bordering cornfields - east of Turpen heard Botteris Sparrows singing commonly. Stopped + collected 4 including one juvenile. I watched an adult with food in its mouth for 15-20 minutes but it would not go to a nest.
