August 21 Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico
In early morning as drove out saw numerous Parragues
on road. During morning flocks of 7 - 10+ Orange-fronted Parulits
flew over almost continuously. Saw 3 flocks of 200+ Dickcissels
each. Boat-tailed Grackles arrived + were feeding on ground
in Acacia grassland.
Rain stopped about 0900 & sun came out for short while.
Hunted for lizards from 1020 to 1050 while waited for Dick to
arrive. Caught one Gecko (sp?) + saw numerous scorpions
under the rocks. Went in to town to market & then back to
hotel. Spent rest of day sketching birds, making few plant
specimens.
Wrote notes, had supper, & to bed at 2030.
August 22 Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico
Up at 0500. Did not rain during night. Drove out to 2 1/2 mi. E of
town to observe + record Aimophila ruficauda. Dick went out to
collect. I recorded & but notes + solo chatter of several pairs,
including those of pair with nest. Then went out collecting.
Found another A. ruficauda nest with 2 eggs. Collected 2
birds from there + Dick later collected the ? as she flushed
off. This is when I earlier in the week, flushed 3 - maybe 6 -
birds + followed them for short time.
Took pictures of habitat, cactus, + flowers.
Spent rest of day preparing birds. Clear, hot, & sunny all day.
Wrote notes, had supper, & to bed at 2030.
