65 LLWbit 1964 Journal August 18 Tlchucantipca, Oaxaca, Mexico 1804 ft. Up at 0530. Rained during night. Drove out to Pari E. farm on Pan Am. Hwy where parked on small side road. Had short breakfast + then I went out to watch Sunichrast Sparrows while Dick went out collecting. Area is closed canopy Thorn scrub forest which now has dense herb layer resulting from rainy season moisture. Where has been cut Acacia is dominant, but does not form closed canopy + has good grass herb layer. sunichrast habitat Sunichrast Sparrows are common in this habitat - especially the closed canopy scrub. Found one pair that had major part of territory in Acacia & grass area. Spent until 1000 watching this pair - Mother carried nesting material to close to road, but unable to find nest. D' actively singing until 0830 + then quiet. I spent most of time foraging on ground + preening on perches just above ground. Day started cloudy to partly overcast, but cleared by 0830 + was hot + sunny. The wind came up at 0800 + remained strong most of day. Back to hotel at 1000 where spent rest of day preparing specimens. Dick took car to have oil changed + grease job ($1000). Also went to market. Had supper, wrote notes, + to bed at 2000.
