August 15 Oaxaca to 6 1/2 mi, SW Matatlan, 4200+ft, Oaxaca, Mexico km 6/16 both localities. Dick collected 2 White-crowned Sparrows with his .22 pistol.
Drove on to km 6/16 where took 2-truck-road into little valley. Camped here last year. Area is dominated by Acacia & Opuntia. Mostly short-grazed grass on valley floor + rocky hillsides.
Prepared birds during the afternoon. Wrote notes, had supper, + to bed at 2015.
August 16 16 1/2 mi, SW Matatlan, 4200+ft, Oaxaca, Mexico km 6/16 Up at 0515. Not yet completely light. Had breakfast & then I went off to record Bridled Sparrow vocalizations. Spent until 0830 recording. Was able to get some songs from a lone ♂ uphill from the highway. Then found 2 pairs with adjacent territories + obtained some poor recordings of the chatter duet (See species acct.). Then spent from 900-1200 watching several pairs of Bridled Sparrows. Most of time watched foraging by pair which had a full grown young which they fed at least twice.
Began to rain about 1215 + rained intermittently all afternoon. Spent afternoon preparing specimens + then went out to collect again only to get caught in a downpour. Fixed best so as to minimize leaks & forgot.
Had supper after writing notes + to bed at 2000
