Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico
Spend ~1/2 hour trying to collect & Beautiful Hummingbird of its finding perches frequented.
Left area at 1100 driving back to Oaxaca City. Collected a Loggerhead Shrike from electric lines S of El Tale in farmland.
Stopped at El Tale for 5-10 minutes. Just North of El Tale found singing male & Hemiphila butteri in cultivated areas - corn, grocery pasture, + alfalfa. Collected 3 males - one on ground in weedy (3-4 inches tall) cultivated field.
Then back to Oaxaca City where spent until 1600 preparing specimens. Then to market for food for next several days had supper at hotel opposite square. Back to Hotel Margarita where to bed at 2130.
August 15
Oaxaca, to 16.5 mi. (3a) Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico Km. 616 on Pan Am Hwy.
Up at 8545. Packed + drove SW on Pan Am Hwy to km. 605. Stopped then on steep-sided hillsides to hunt Bridled Sparrows. On upper slopes are open oak woods that are being cut-over by the natives. Lower hill sides are dominated by Acacia, stream gullies have lusher, deciduous trees forming essentially closed canopy. Bridled Sparrow are most abundant where tree + shrub layer form nearly to completely closed canopy. Heard several chattering pair + Dick reported that they have some wing fluttering associated with chatter.
Drove on to Km. 607 where hunted Acacia-dominated hillsides for Bridled Sparrows - found family group including one fledgling. Had full grown young Rufous-crowned Sparrows at
