To bed after supper August 14 Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico Up at 0500. Drove to km 595 - just beyond - to locality 4&mi S of Matatlan. This is just after one leaves the valley of Oaxaca & begin climb into mountains. Habitat is rocky hillside covered with hard-leaved chaparral with manzanita, Quercus rugosa, + other shrubs. Tallest trees as 10-12 feet. Some of the area is cut-over for cornfields + several streams have cut rather deep gullies. Walking along paths used by Mexicans makes collecting relatively easy. Spent only part of morning above road where collected Oaxaca Sparrow & that came in to 'squeak' + then a female Bidled Sparrow in shrub thicket near cornfields. Then dropped below road & worked along stream bottom. Here found group of 3 Slaty Vireos that apparently came into 'screws'. Collected & that was foraging in 20 foot oak tree. Others worked uphill + could hear one calling. Chased it uphill & then collected this, calling juvenile from an Acacia just above where shot &. Followed another stream bottom & shot female Oaxaca Sparrow from oak-dominated hillside after she came downhill in response to 'screws'
