July 26 Guernavaca, Morelos, Mexico
Up at 0500. Had breakfast + drove out to Canon de Lobos. Did, went
down into bottom of canyon + worked north to mouth of side canyon
extending up to west. I went up east-facing slope into area where
watched Aimophila humeralis. Spent until 1100 up there with half hour
out to go back to car to show our collecting permits to some game wardens
( so they said). In return they gave me Phalotyx fasciatus shot just
down the road. Saw flock of White-naped Swifts, just above west crest.
Swirling in flock of 100+ while then broke up into smaller flocks feeding just
above tree tops. At least 4 Stilogorus cineraceus (2087 + 248) perched in
tree on hillside. A pair of Varied Bunting appeared - not for 1st time today -
on east facing hillside. Several Rusty Sparrows calling from near lower
limit of oaks on both E+W-facing slope. 2 Trogons (Piob.T.elegans)
calling from trees over crest.
Back to apartment where spent afternoon sketching birds.
Wrote notes, had supper, + to bed.
Clear in early morning - cloudy to east along mountains - clouding
up by mid-afternoon.
