45 LHW014 1964 Journal July 23 Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico Ammomanes habitat Up at 0500. Had breakfast & drove out to CaƱon de Lobos. I walked up east facing hillside to area of shrubby 2nd growth. Some Acacia - mostly mock orange. Area mostly in shrubs, but some patches of grass - too dense for Ammomanes nubicola. Spent morning until 1015 watching (trying to) A. humeralis. There were at least three pairs in area. At 0739 flock of 50+ Streptopoea flew by going south just below the west crest. Could not see any white throats - so probably S. semicollaris. At 0815 flock of 50+ Streptopoea zonura swirling above W crest, from just above crest to several hundred feet up, generally moving in clockwise direction, but sometimes broke off into flapping flight along ridge. One small swift (Chaetura rufica?) with them. Heard several singing or Chiquis Sparrows above me where oaks are present. Also at least one trogon. Dick collected about 1 mile beyond SE end of canyon for A. nubicola. Saw 5 or 6 pairs + two groups of three. After shooting one nubicola noted one other + 2 A. humeralis in same tree - no apparent antagonism. Back to apartment for lunch. I spent afternoon preparing birds while Dick took car to garage to have window fixed. Supposed to be there at 1300, but repairman didn't arrive until 1600. Took 45 minutes + cost 20 pesos. Had supper after writing notes + & bed at 2000. Day was bright & sunny after 0830. Sun behind cloud until then.
