LL WOLF 1964 Journal July 18 Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico Up at 0500. After breakfast had to get some poor fellows out of bed to move his car so we could get out. Arrived in CaƱon de Lobos at 0600. Already light, but last of bats still flying. Dick plans to hunt west hillside + canyon bottom in South, drier - end of canyon. Also where crocods have been made for cornfields. I walk down toward where Aimogula ruficanda nest is located. Find pair just N of them on other side of road. Surrounded by pairs of A. humeralis, but no apparent conflict (though saw two species within 10-15 feet). Watched these birds for short time + tried to find nest - no luck. Then down to watch ruficanda nest near side of road. Birds would not go to nest in 2 hours I watched so light to keep young from starving or cooking. Spent rest of morning to 1100 watching A. ruficanda + humeralis when could find either. Have pair of humeralis located in 100 % tree canopy area. Act like maybe have nest or young nearby. Saw cover of 5+ Barred Owl (Phalotus fuscatus), 2 Graceful Gold Anis flew across canyon from E to W + 2 groups of Boat-tailed Grackles (6-8) flew over going N following canyon. Dick collected 11 birds including 2 sub-adult young A. humeralis. I weighed young A. ruficanda + then back to apartment. Spent afternoon preparing birds + trying to identify some dominant tree + shrub species from dry end (S) of canyon. Met with little success. Had supper, wrote notes, + to bed at 2030.
