56 hills of 1964 Journal July 12 Ciudad Mente, Tamaulipas to N Colonia, Hidalgo, Mexico Up at 0500. Had breakfast + broke camp. Drove south on R85 thru some dry country + a more humid valley. Becomes more lush S of Valle. Just beyond Rancho Viejo, Hidalgo the country becomes dry again + thorn scrub becomes dominant vegetation after section of oak-pine-oak. Much of the high country is farmed - mostly agave. Stopped ~ 1 mi. S of Jacelillo at an abandoned fort + looked for birds. Saw Hooded Yellowthroat + Rusty Sparrow. Stopped for evening at @ 1745 as drop down into valley where Colonia is located. 58938. Cooked supper, wrote notes, + to bed. July 13 2mi. N. Colonia, Hidalgo, to Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico Up at 0600. Had breakfast + packed car. Drove south toward Mexico City to 18 mi. S when turned east to San Juan Teotihuacan. Spent until 1000 looking at Aztec ruins including pyramid of the sun. Then thru Mexico City + on R95 via toll road to Cuernavaca at 1200. Spent until @ 1700 looking for an apartment. Finally took one on road out g town to CaƱon de Lobos. On Calle Moderna just past the high school. Then drove SW on old R.95 thru Acatlipa looking for locality mentioned by J.S. Rowley as good for Amphilis ruficauda + A. humeralis. No luck. Found some A. ruficauda + shot 3 that flew from same tree. At least two of them had been courting - duetting with another pair. Back to Cuernavaca where arranged apartment ate supper, tagged specimens + to bed at 2100. ruficanda group
