LLWolf 1964 Journal July 11 Brownsville, Cameron Co., Texas to Ciudad Mante, Tamaulipas Up at 0500. Had breakfast & packed car before leaving motel at 0745. Drove to downtown Brownsville to discover that the Mexican Consulate opens at 0900. Mailed package of hups back to Berkeley + had cup of coffee while waiting. At 0900 the secretary at consulate said we must wait until consul comes in at 0930, when he arrived he agreed to provide consular permit forgana, but that by the rules we should have done this in San Francisco. Had to return at 1106 to pick up permit. Obtained car insurance at Humble agency at Gateway Bridge. After ice cream went back to consulate + picked up permits. Drove across Rio Grande & saw customs building in Matamoras. Validated our tourist cards + obtained consular permit, then for two dollars + 80 pesos the inspector agreed not to look at all our equipment. Left Matamoras at 1230 mileage 58323. Drove south thru farming country & some mesquite woodland to Ciudad Victoria where bought gas. In Victoria turn left at 1st stoplight on R 85 to Mexico City. As went S on R 85 the Thorn scrub became more verdent + dense. Noted flocks of 25+ White-winged Doves both N+ S. of Victoria. Flock of 25+ Mexican Crows roosting in mesquites along road about 1700. Just south of Ciudad Mante came into sugar cane fields finally found road leading off to W which we followed for 3+ miles. There turned on dirt road along canal + turned E into sugar cane field where spent night. Mileage 58614. Do bed at 2000.
