July 9 Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas
Temp. 77-95°F.
Up at 0530. After breakfast Dick took me to area 2 mi. W of headquarters
To watch Boheri Sparrows. Saw Black-bellied Tree Duck perched on
dead mesquite - apparently roosted there during night. Many Boat-tailed
Grackles roosting in mesquites. Some leaving at 0530. Most gone by
0615. Spent morning watching Boheri Sparrows. Found another nest
with 2 eggs, 2 young, + 1 Molothrus ater egg. Flecked both adults from
nest when went to measure eggs at 1030.
Dick drove to Port Isabel Rd. just W of refuge boundary on East Rio
Grande Road, turned S for 4-5 miles to airport a dirt road (pole wind)
turned E to airport road then S on airport road to Hwy 570
where turned E, followed 570 to Holly Beach Rd (2-3 mi). Drove
NE on Holly Beach Rd for 3/4 mile. Spent rest of morning until 1000
hunting here. Used tape recorder to try to attract Boheri Sparrows
to collect.
Back at 1030 to feel me up. Back to camp where spent afternoon
preparing birds. At 1545 I drove back to Laguna Atascosa (2 mi
W headquarters) to watch Boheri again. Watched pair #1 feeding
young + photographed part of pair #2 -- one eggs hatched.
Back to camp at 1830 where had supper. Dick had caught
two Ribbon Snakes & a Sceloporus while I was gone.
After supper he went up to take shower while I did dishes
& finished a letter. He talked to Dick Rigby & thanked him
for his help + interest. Dick returned about 2045 shortly
after I had gone to bed.
