Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas
Up at 0500. Dick still not feeling well so stayed in bed until I left after breakfast at 0530. Says he plans to stay in camp today + get over his headache. I went out to a Zone. Wof Headquarters along S. shore of Laguna Atascosa to area when saw territorial encounters + did some tape recordings of several OOO. Found pair carrying food + soon one adult went to ground. By 0700 was time of next location + walked over to find one young ~ 7 days old. Spent rest of morning watching this pair with notes on where surrounding OOO were singing.
Had lunch + wrote letters from 1300 to 1500 then went back to watch Botteri Sparrows. Took pictures of nest tree after then spent rest of time locating other pairs. At least four OO are using the area. Territories seem to be 200+ yds in largest dimension. Bird #1 has long narrow territory bounded by Laguna + road, does cross just to other side of road. Back to camp at 1900.
After supper drove over to Headquarters when talked to Dick Rigby about areas to collect. He had called Ned Hudson the local bird expert who said areas to S of Refuge were good. Dick got permission to hunt on land owned by Jim Biggs. Supposed to take Road to Port Isabel just W of Refuge boundary off Rio Hondo Road. Followed to R. 570 (R110) + turn east. Then to N at next road. Or can go to E to sign pointing to Holly Beach. Dick says will fly these areas in the morning.
To bed at 2010 after writing notes.
