LL Wolf 1964 29 Journal July 6 Walter Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., to Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas. 57783.0 - left Walter Foundation at 0830. Drove into Sinton where tried to get Dick's watch at repair shop - not finished yet so he will have it sent to Brownsville. Continued on + went into Corpus Christi + picked up shotgun at the repair shop. Then back out to U.S. 77 + drove south thru farming country. Bought gas in Kingsville then S again this time thm mequite dominates grasslands. Much hay been overgrown + saw one field almost completely overgrown with Prickly Pear (Opuntia). Noted stretch of road with sand ridges on east side. Some were clear sand + probably moving. Again around Harlingen farming takes over much of the land. Drove into Harlingen + picked up mail - then S to Brownsville where got mail + ammunition from MVZ. Then back north for 17 miles to San Benito. Took road 345 to NE until reach road 106. Once on this road go straight - several places where crossroads, ignore the dead end road sign + continue on. Road curves to right but is marked as going to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Headquarters. This is where I wander live but there is an office in the Post Office bldg. in San Benito. Good idea to stop thru and inquire before going out to Refuge. Met Richard Rigby + George Unland the 2 wardens. Can camp on refuge. Unland is apparently a birder that has been here 6t years so knows locales for most of birds. Says Botheri + Cassini's Sparrows occur together here. Tomorrow will tell. Set up camp, had supper, wrote notes + to bed.
