LL WOLF 1964 Journal July 4 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas in tent #5. Dick had unfortunate luck with the guns. Mine was not fixed + the gunsmith was not there - so we are still without guns until at least Monday. Try to borrow one from Dr. Cottam of Welder Foundation. Walked back to headquarters then rode back out to my giant tank with Bob Rankow to show him the Painted Bunting nest. The ? slipped off the nest (3 1/2" up) at the edge of a Celtis (actually in Lanthoxylum) + dropped down to near ben of Celtis. did not make any noise. One of young had Lepidopteran larva n 1/2 way into mouth. Unable to hold up head for long periods - drooped n 15 sec after we arrived. Then back to headquarters for lunch + to pack birds to ship back to Berkeley. Had a nice picnic at 1600 to celebrate the 4th - barbecued kid. After supper drove out to Lake Camp to check on Scares - failed Pygcatthr not with four eggs. Disregard to late nesting of Yellow-billed cuckoo. Dr. Clarence Cottam tells us that he saw one nest "2 or 3 weeks" ago that contained young. Probably he was correct in identification, but we have not seen any young cuckoos out + flying.
