LLWolf 1964 Journal July 1 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas Up at 0500. Into field after breakfast. Dick drove me to Mesquite Tank where O#2 singing, but surrounding O's quiet. Looked for O #1 + #5 anyway - no luck. Walked to NW along rat road (not on refuge map) for 300+ yds. Came to another concentration of singing O Cassini Sparrows. Picked out an accessible bird & began to watch him - 0605 - just as hea I little moved thru his territory. Spent until 0830 here. Dick arrived with news that my shotgun was broken. He will fix it & return to field. I went back & tried to watch O 300 yards to W of mesquite tank, but no luck. Heard #2 O in this area singing but he quieted down by time I arrived - so back to area of hawk to hunt for O's #1 + #5. Still no luck so watched O #2 to compare with quieter day before and a little earlier. While watching both O #1 + #5 sang, but not consistently. Dick arrived at 1100 with a total of 9 birds. Back to headquarters for lunch & to prepare specimens. Dick put up some reptiles - then went into Corpus Christi, Texas to have gun fixed & try to get some boxes for male birds. I spent afternoon preparing specimens. Hot & windy. Supper at 1830. Write notes. July 2 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas Up at 0500.
