LLWS1f 1964 Journal June 30 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas Up at 0500. After breakfast Dick drove me out to mosquito tanks to look for Cassin Sparrows. #2 was singing so I spent ~ 1/2 hour recording most flight songs. He sang until 0950 when I left to return to headquarters. About 0700 2 flights of Laughing Gulls (2 + 3 birds) went over to E. Four & Boat-tailed Grackles flew over going NW & soon reappeared in reverse direction. Family of Cardinals - at least three young - still in area & singing from mosquito beneath which I sat during observ. periods. Bewick Wren came into mosquito & I watched it picking insects from a spider web. At least one adult & one immature Painted Buntings have territories that overlap those of Cassin Sparrow #2. No other species of sparrow seen on his territory. Day started calm & cool. Wind began to pick up by 0700 & it was hot (>88°) by 0900. Humidity reported at 49%. Nearly cloudless except for large storm cloud in E in early morning. Dick collected in Patric Welder ranch in open mosquito areas trying for Cassin Sparrows. He got 19 birds including nine Cassin Sparrows, 2 Desert Sparrows, + 2 Leach Sparrows. Full grown young with each species. Spent from 1030 to 1800 papering specimens collected today. Wind stronger in afternoon & temperature went above 90°F (94-96°). Cools off by 1800 & wind begins to calm. Write notes, had supper,
