LL Wolf 1964 Journal June 29 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co, Texas Up at 0500. Had breakfast & into field. Drove over much of Foundation looking for new area. Finally stopped at Mequitt Tank (sec. 44-8) Area here is dense brush - mostly mesquite both shrub & clearings of low lying. Hen grass forms path with occasional wide spots thru the thorny brush. Not any taller but much thinner than where studying yesterday. Found birds here (at least some) to be more vocal. #2 spent most of time I was watching singing. Concentrated half of morning's work on a pair of Cassin's Sparrows that were chipping actively in a restricted area. Finally flushed the newly grown young. Watched activities of #2 until 1030 when left area. Had family of Cardinals chirping excitedly around me - not sure why. Laughing Gulls flying SE overhead & Boat-tailed Grackles going NW. First year Red Painted Bunting chased Cassin's Sparrows whenever they approached him too closely. Dick went back to area 12 mi. SW. Lefugio & spent much of his time walking along fence. Collected 89 birds including 70 #1 + 1 # Cowbird (for headed) in flock. Also young Scissor-tailed Flycatcher & Bell Vireo. Got one 1st winter Cassin Sparrow. Went into town for supplies & gas. Stopped on Patrice Welder ranch on way back & obtained permission to collect on that land. I spent afternoon preparing specimens while Dick worked on his insects. He brought in a fledgling Lark Sparrow that he found on lawn. Had supper (after short rain ~ 1530), worked more on birds, then wrote notes, & to bed at 20:30.
