June 27 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas
Found several more groups with adults caring for young nearly or fully grown. Several times a group I was following seemed to merge with family of Larke Sparrows.
Found nest of Painted Bunting - 2 up in hackberry, suspended like a vine-nest. At least 2 young about 1 week old; flight feathers partly grown, but fuzz on no feathers on back. Carried fresh sac 100+ yds from nest + food back that far while I watched.
Watched another 1st yo. of Painted Bunting singing from top of mesquite + phone lines above family of Larke Sparrows that moved thru area just beneath him.
Dick went out to collect in riparian situation along Aransas River on R.770. Came in with 4 Painted Buntings, 2 White-eyed Vireos, 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker (from farther along road), + a young cardinal.
Drove into Sinton for supplies + gas. Also mailed postcard to Dr. Miller asking for more ammunition + note-paper. Then back to Foundation for lunch + to prepare birds. I finished at 1800 + waited for Dick so we go out for more specimens. (Wooste notes.)
Went out to locality 12 mi. S of Refugio, Refugio Co. Tried to get Cassin's Sparrows with no luck until one flew in just as we were leaving. Flushed young with 3/4 grown tail but unable to collect it easily. Adults are very wary + flush 50-60 yards ahead + sit very tightly. Came on solid Croftalis strox just at edge of a mesquite. When Dick tried to collect it the snake struck with no warning rattle + then backed with several more strikes int
