hhw/17 1964 Journal June 25 Sunton, Texas San Patricio Co. Stopped raining at 1600. We came back to headquarters & got fixed up with a room to stay in. Had supper & met several people working here - Dr. Wm. Thompson, Bob Larkins, Eric Bolen. Spent a short time in the library checking literature, then I went to bed. June 26 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas Up at 0500. After breakfast Dick drove me down to near Lagoa to Windmere where I spent until 1030 trying to record & observe Cassin's Sparrows (sec 40, lots 2 & 6). The area is open mesquite grassland with mesquite up to 10-12 feet tall but average of tall plants in 6-8 feet. Many clumps of mesquite only 1-2 feet tall, perhaps kept down by grazing. Also Opuntia cactus & a stem-branched cactus. Grasses go up to 12-15" tall around mesquite clumps & cobias where protected from grazing by deer & cattle. Other 6-8" tall & rather sparse. Distance between taller mesquites ~ X = 20-30%. This makes it an open, low-cover area really ideal for watching these birds, especially since they have a flight song. Hard to follow individuals as they do not allow close approach. Did spend several hours watching pair feeding young with ~ 3/4 groundfail. Unable to get many recordings as birds do not allow close approach & wind becomes too strong for recording by 0730.
