June 25 Sinton, San Patricio Co., Texas.
Spent last night under shelters at partly completed roadside shelter 12 mi. NE Sinton. Had rain in early evening & got very little sleep. But raining cut cars on highway kept us awake. Finally up at 0600. Had good breakfast while Dick collected three birds. Then both back into field. I spent until 0915 chasing Cassin's Sparrows thru open mesquite, hackberry grassland. Some were up in flight songs. Also full grown juveniles. Then until 1200 preparing specimens. Had lunch & drove back into Sinton. Passed Welder Wildlife Foundation entrance on way into town.
Gate locked. Called to office of Foundation from town & they had someone meet us at gate. Dr. Cameron Cotton, the director, spent most of the afternoon showing us around much of the 7800 acres. They have tagging programs on deer + turkeys with many marked individuals.
Had a terrific rainstorm as we came into area - 1.17 inches recorded at Headquarters building. Dr. Cotton said the area has had little rain in past three years - all the "permanent" lakes on the property are essentially dry.
Saw many areas that looked favorable for Cassin's Sparrows. Heard many singing birds. They seem to range from low mesquite in open country to rather dense 20-25 foot mesquite areas. Dr. Cotton says they occur in some very sense stuff. Also apparently small numbers winter here, but most migrate out.
