LLWolf 1964 Journal June 22 Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas Up at 0500. After quick breakfast drove SE from camp along fire road. Stopped just across a cattle guard + played tape recordin in area of relatively open 50-75 foot long lay pines. Soon had 80 flame-woods Sparrow within gun range + collected him. Another had started singing ~200 yards to SE so over there with recorder, unable to collect this bird. (Newton) + turned to N (left) on dirt road toward main paved road into camp. Stopped & checked nest (less) I watched & building. Then out to main road + turned right (toward R.63) for 1/2 mi. (here have nest with young. Spent until 1045 in this area hoping to get feeding rate data. Birds very wary & approached nest on ground. Could judge when young were fed only by begging notes of young. Both parents fed. Back to camp for lunch + to prepare birds. Maintenance man for campground cameby + told us that the elevation was ~2500 feet. Also that longleaf pines were planted by government during 1930's. Finished birds at 1800. Wrote notes + plan to wash car. Min temp. - 70° F. Max temp. 94°F. - ~1200 After washed car & walked back to Lwi.S. to check A. aestivalis nest while Dile worked on his insects + lizards. Found nest unchanged. Four Ki'lldeer were at edge of gravel pit near nest area. Probably a family group. Then down for short swim, collect lizards, + obtain 5 gallons of water. Ate supper, wrote notes + to bed by 2000.
