June 22 Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas
Up at 0500. After quick breakfast drove SE from camp along
fire road. Stopped just across a cattle guard + played tape
recordin in area of relatively open 50-75 foot long lay pines.
Soon had 80 flame-woods Sparrow within gun range + collected
him. Another had started singing ~200 yards to SE so over
there with recorder, unable to collect this bird. (Newton)
+ turned to N (left) on dirt road toward main paved road
into camp. Stopped & checked nest (less) I watched & building.
Then out to main road + turned right (toward R.63) for 1/2 mi.
(here have nest with young. Spent until 1045 in this area
hoping to get feeding rate data. Birds very wary & approached
nest on ground. Could judge when young were fed only by
begging notes of young. Both parents fed.
Back to camp for lunch + to prepare birds. Maintenance
man for campground cameby + told us that the elevation
was ~2500 feet. Also that longleaf pines were planted by
government during 1930's. Finished birds at 1800. Wrote notes
+ plan to wash car.
Min temp. - 70° F.
Max temp. 94°F. - ~1200
After washed car & walked back to Lwi.S. to check A. aestivalis
nest while Dile worked on his insects + lizards. Found nest
unchanged. Four Ki'lldeer were at edge of gravel pit near
nest area. Probably a family group. Then down for short swim,
collect lizards, + obtain 5 gallons of water.
Ate supper, wrote notes + to bed by 2000.
