LL Wolf 1964 Journal June 21 Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas. came to another paved road after passing three mixed pines and oaks, some good stands of oaks, + good pine stands then turn right to first road to left (dirt). Fence across road. Parked + walked back into area of 50-75 foot pine (longleaf) with scattered oaks - understory of scattered shrubs, nearly continuous layer of grass, + pine needles. Here he encountered a group of 5 Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Managed finally to collect a young ? after long chase. Back area can found a pair of Pine-woods Sparrows. Shot both, but could only find one. Also found nest which he showed me. He also found fledgling on 2nd trip - probably from nest. Also checked nest we found yesterday 1/2 mi. S. Boykin Springs along road from springs to R. 63. Returned to camp + went swimming for short time + fished canterus. Back to camp where prepared Summer Tamagoe Dick got in oaks + the fledgling P.w. Sparrows. I made supper + wrote notes while Dick cleaned up around camp a bit. Max. temp. today 94° F. (shade). To bed at 2000.
