Turned east on R. 7 to Ratcliff Lake Recreation Center. Had breakfast in midst of rains. While Dick wrote a few notes in the miserable weather, I walked along road looking for birds. Found Black + White + Hooded Warbler, Summer Tanager, Crested Flycatcher, Red-eyed + Wh.-eyed Vireo, Blue Jay, Cardinal, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Chickadee, Chimney Swift, E. Wood Pewee, Tufted Titmouse. Drove into Ratcliff, but no pay phone so drove back 3 mi. E to Kenward + called Edgar Kincaid in Austin, Texas. He told us to go on to Angelina National Forest to find possible Pine-woods Sparrows. We drove on R. 103 into Lufkin where on business 69 on east edge of town is National Forest Headquarters. Stopped in to talk with a ranger to tell him our plans + ask for possible locales for Amphibian activities. He directed us to Boykin Springs in Angelina. Drove SE on R. 69 to Zavalla where took R. 63 to SE. to Boykin Springs turnoff. Stopped once on way in to Springs to check open pine hillside for sparrows. No luck. At Boykin Springs piddled long after short downpour + then had lunch. Decided to try some more exploring in pine habitat around park. Drove to first dirt road to east + parked about 1/2 mile down road. Soon after entering woods of a long-dead pine found pair of Pine-woods.
