June 6 8 mi. E. Davis Mtn. Jct.
Elevation 3850 ft. mileage 2600x.
Up at 0530. I went out to hunt for Cassin Sparrows while Dick made breakfast. Found 2; missed both &
returned to camp at 0630.
Area is juniper, mesquite, grass, + assorted thorny
shrubs. On sloping upper ground there are junipers &
musquiate [illegible] larro[?] type shrubs. Grasses + herbs scattered
leaving large % of ground bare. Near highway is low part
+ water collects here. Here are 5-10 foot legume shrubs
+ grass. Between these 2 vegetation types is grass
with scattered 2-4 foot legume shrubs.
Left for eastern Texas at 0715. Bought gas at Davis
Mtn. Jct. then turned SE on R. 290 for San Angelo.
As we drove east in Texas the country became
greener. Just east of Waco on R. 84 we got our
first view. Dined in Waco where we bought groceries
for supper. Drove east from Waco on R. 84.
Had supper from 1830 - 1915 at roadside park east of
Waco. Heard Blue Jay, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Chickadee,
Cardinal, Mockingbird, Chimney Swift.
Drove on to 12 mi. E. Palestine (2 mi. E. Elkhart) where
pitched tent + spent night. To bed at 2130 after miserable
ride thru construction area W of Palestine. After rains road
was a sea of mud. Heard on radio that a small town near
Waco had 14 1/2 inches of rain on Monday.
