Up at 1530. Drove out to Wilmot Rd. to look for Rufous-winged Sparrows. Had breakfast after touring three mosquito area, where birds were common in recent years. Found that cattle were grazing the area + had eliminated most of the grass. Only ground layer vegetation was a composite mostly dried. Mosquito losing leaves; hackberries partly defoliated. Could find only one pair of B.A. carpalis on this side of road. Did find group of 3 young Verdines.
Walked thru west side of road looking for birds. Area is really dry. Found 4 pairs of Ammospiza carpalis in this area. Mourning Doves flying about commonly. Watched 1 adult feeding 3 or 4 young Verdines - Except for a Mourning Dove nest found no other evidence of breeding - do know that Curve-Billed Thrashers & Cactus Wrens have nest grown, independent young.
Back to car at 0900 & drove back to Tucson. Bought groceries & took car to have it greased tire changed. Visited Zoology Dept. of Univ of Arizona. Had supper + went out to Mt. Lemmon Rd. to study areas of Bob Rickleys. Following nestlings growth + weight changes.
Saw several isolated or Purple Martins plus nests with eggs and/or small young of Curve-billed
