LWOLF 1963 Journal Dec. 18 Came back to Tucson to prepare specimens. At 1330 started drive up Mt. Lemmon thry in Santa Catalina Mts. Stopped in Molino Basin + found the area very quiet. Continued up thru oaks to pine - obble + finally to conifers. Here snow on ground. In to Mt. Lemmon Lodge. Back to Tucson at sunset. Drive takes about 1 hours unless stops are made. Dec. 19 Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona Up at 0630. Drove to canyon 2 mi S. Molino Basin turned broad. Spent until 10AM following Aimophila ruficeps around on the rocky, oak grassland hillsides below the highway. There & some water in the stream, but it is not running. Found a mixed flock of sparrows - Lincoln's, Black-chinned, White-crowned, + mostly Chipping working along thru the shrubs & oaks along the stream. Also Redfin-sailed Towhees + Ruby-crowned Knights. When closely followed the flock would move up onto the hillsides but more commonly stayed near the stream bottom. At several points A. ruficeps pairs - meaning two birds - joined the flock. Collected 3 A. ruficeps, 1 Spizula atricapilla, + 1 Zonotrichia leucophrys.
