LL Wolf 1963 Journal Dec. 17 In general birds seemed to be much less numerous than in January, 1963. John Tramantano - graduate student in Zoology at Univ. Ariz. - says there has been a recent cold snap in Tucson. This may account for small numbers of species + individuals. Also may be partly because we arrived rather late in morning. Watched the small flocks of Rufous-winged until early afternoon. Spent a little time collecting + then back to Univ. of Ariz. to prepare specimens. Back to "Salvarotto House" for supper. Dec. 18 Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona Up at 0530. Drove out to W./Nest Rd. locality. Arrived about 0700. Weather cool - frost was 32°F. at night + wind comes up soon after sunrise. Arnold + I picked up the snap-traps lost in cholla-mesquite area. Caught Nestoma albigula, Dipodomys sp., + Citellus harrisii. Spent rest of morning until 0900 trying to collect sparrows + a Green-tailed Towhee. Discovered a mixed flock of Vesper, Brewer, &s-crowned Sparrows mostly feeding in the mesquite-grassland. Especially Vesper-Brewers, flocking together. The Rufous-winged Sparrows seemed still to form intraspecific flocks. The two individuals encountered in mixed flocks may have been there fortuitously and was chasing the flock.
