LLWOLF 1963 Journal Dec. 14 in the area at 75-28°. Set several mammal traps around base of Larrea, Baited with orange peel. Dec. 15 49/47.0 Palm Desert, Calif. to 1 mi. N. Yuma, Imperial Co., Calif. Up at 06:05 after cool, but not uncomfortable night. Small number of mosquitoes buzzed and bit during night. Temperature probably about to 32°F. Sun just coming up when arose. Finally lighted western valley floor by 0700. Heard no birds when first up. Then Phainopepla began calling along with Verdine. Appeared that Phainopepla or were found singly + perhaps maintain winter territories. Noted one hummingbird - species? - buzzing from exposed perches on shrubs. House Finches common, Bewick Wren - several. Area is alluvial desert wash - vegetation dominated by Larrea, Palo Verde, + catclaw. Broke camp + left area at 0730. Larrea + several species of herbs blooming. One looked like an Ornithogrum. Right around Palm Desert much of the tan sand was covered with purple blooms of creeping ground herb. Drove south on 99 to Vindelo Service Station which is at entrance to Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. Drove back to refuge boundary. Found-
