LLWolf 1963 Journal Dec. 14 Berkeley, Calif. to Deep Canyon Research Area, Palm Desert, Calif. mileage at Berkeley 48568.0 picked up Arntzon Gardarsson at 0800. Then Jan Serlin + roommates, then Richard Root at 0830. Drove across Bay Bridge to San Francisco Airport. Dropped Jan + roommates at airport at 0925. Drove south on 101 to 61/try where turned east on 152. Around Los Baros noted several flocks of Starlings. Also mixed flocks of Bicolored Redwings + Brewer's Blackbirds. Going thru Pacheco Pass climb up thru oak parkland, oak woodland + chaparral. Along stream have sycamores + willows. Sycamores still holding onto dead leaves. Continued on to R 99. Down 99 to Belera field & took 466 across Tehachapi Pass. Road crew working on widening the road. Held up for 15+ minutes. Had supper in Mojave. Drove on 466 to Kramer Jet where turned south on R 398. To San Bernardino, then east via 70 + 99 to 111. Then Palm Springs where stopped for cup of hot chocolate. On to Palm Desert where turned left on Portal Rd. (near far edge of town). Go out Portal Rd thru S curve where take dirt road saying "to stables." Go past Palm Desert Museum & turn left on next road. Good places to camp in wash. To bed at 1030 PM. Reports on radio gave lowest temperatures anticipated
