August 22 Cuernavaca, Morelos to 12 mi. E. Zitacuaru, Michoacan.
Drove back to Cuernavaca then headed for Mexico City on old Mex. 95. Just across border with Distrito Federal we stopped at La Cima, km. 43. While I prepared specimens John went out into bunch grass + rock outcrop with scattered pines + found 5+ Sierra Madre Sparrows. Collected 2 for Michigan. Then we both finished up the specimens. I went out to try to get a Xerospiza, but was unable to collect either of the two I saw.
Headed for Mexico City. Took cutoff at Villa Oregon to Desierto de los Leones + La Venta. Connects with Mex. 15 to Guadalajara. Drove until 1800 + stopped at Bosquechar Park just before Michoacan border. Had supper + went to bed.
August 23 Zitacuaru, Michoacan to Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Up at 0545 after fitful night - cold + trucks passing on road. Had breakfast as sun came up. Temperature must have been around 40-45F. Headed west on Mex.15. Took turnoff to Zinapécuaro which was supposed to be a faster route. It is not so mountainous, but the road becomes almost impassable in places. Probably good during dry season. They are preparing to pave parts of road causing yet more poor road conditions.
