August 17 Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico
Up at 0530. Drove out to 2+ miles east of town +
parked along road. John tried to record Aimophila
ruficauda, but could only get chatter + call notes. Very
sporadic singing. Tried to collect ruficauda here, but
this family group is all we could find. Apparently
vegetation too dense as A. semichrasti was common.
Drove several hundred yards further + parked in
area where Thorn forest has been removed + Acacias
+ other legumes have come in. Vegetation in this
field is much more sparse + walking is easy
as tree branches from adjacent legumes do not meet.
This seems to be preferred habitat of A.ruficauda
+ they are spaced out in pairs throughout the area.
Spent until 0900 collecting here. Found 2 nests
of Groove-billed Ani - one with eggs + one with young
with feathers just emerging. One nest of Rufous-napped
Whin with 4eggs. Flushed a nightjar - probably
Caprimulgus ridgwayi - but was unable to collect it.
Back to Hotel where prepared specimens rest of
day. Wrote notes, had supply + a bed.
