Then appear to be 4 distinct layers (as there were at 11 mi. SW Matatlan) of vegetation. An emergent layer which is represented by scattered trees. The tree layer canopy which is essentially closed is formed mostly of figures. Below this an small trees + shrubs. Then the herb layer. During the dry season I think this layer is very sparse, but now it is 2-3 feet tall + very dense. Makes it nearly impossible to watch activities of birds on or near the ground. Except for few trees (apparently of one species) all woody vegetation is foliated at this time of year. Semichesti habitat Spent early morning trying to record & determine uses of vocalizations of Semichestat Sparrows. Then spent until 0700 trying to follow birds Semichestat Sp. for observing. Not much luck. By 0730 the wind has become fairly strong + the sun is hot. Most vocal activity has ceased + the birds are difficult to follow in dense vegetation. From 0900 to 1000 collected to supplement material John had gotten. Found family group of 4-6 Tropical Mockingbirds. Apparently both Laturns
