August 13- 11 mi. s.w. Matatlan to Tehuantepec, Oaxaca
Up at 0545. Tried to record songs before breakfast with no luck. After breakfast packed car & started driving toward Tehuantepec looking for areas to collect Bridled Sparrows. Vegetation became more xeric & the herb layer less dense. For a few miles I though Bridled Sparrows might drop out because of xeric conditions. Then found hillsides above stream had pairs scattered across. Worked up hillside & around hill to Pan Am Hwy so it circled around 7 up. Obtained 9 Bridled Sparrows + 1 Rufous-napped Wren. Drove 5 miles down road & found less precipitous areas to collect. John obtained a fledgling & I found what may be a nest of Bridled Sparrows. Continued on toward Tehuantepec. S. of El Camaron road winds thru pine rock before dropping down into thorn forest. Found Seminchest Sparrows just south of El Boguero. From calls Bridled Sparrows + Seminchest Sparrows overlay ranges about 20 miles - probably more. Arrived in Tehuantepec to find it hot & dry. Fellows in Hotel Tehuantepec said last rain was 5 days ago.
Had supper wrote notes & to bed.
