August 12 - contd.
Up at 0545. I went out to record vocalizations of Aimophila
mysticalis while John made breakfast. Recorded until 0700.
Obtained songs of two different σσ, but could not get
good recordings of their pair chatter. While John went
out collecting - I tried to find birds (Bridled Sparrows) to
watch. Found a pair with one, presumably the ?,
pulling + carrying nest material. During four hours
of trying to observe, did not see any foraging behavior
+ was unable to find nest. Habitat is just too dense
in herb + shrub layers to watch the birds.
Prepared four Bridled Sparrows John collected,
had lunch + went back into field. Sat for 1½ hours
in spot where watched Bridled Sparrows in morning.
Heard occasional tzeet notes but never saw birds
until I 'sclussed' one up. Then I missed my shot.
Found family groups of White-crested bantcatchers
in the thorn forest (or tropical deciduous) vegetation.
Young were full grown, but still with adults. Collected
an adult σσ + a juv. ?.
Prepared these + back into field again until 1645.
Then wrote notes + prepared supper.
About 1845, Bridled Sparrows on hillside had
brief song period + heard several pairs chattering. Then
were silent.
