August 10 Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico
Up at 0430. Drove to locale 4mi. sw. Matatlan. Heard first Amphilus mysticus sing at 0575. Followed within a minute by A. refecips + then A. notosticta. Morning was generally cool + damp. Was sprinkling as we ate breakfast. Low clouds moved thru area during most of morning + there was a stiff breeze which made recording very difficult. John spent until about 0930 trying to record Amphilus notosticta. Finally did get some good recordings of one bird + others of another. Later I collected a s[illegible] from each location when he had recorded so these are probably the same birds as on the tape. I spent early morning trying to find A. mysticus to draw. Not successful. Philogonys + Tanagra aurica were feeding on mistletoe berries on shrubs on hillside. Philogonys were very abundant + noisy. Lucifer Hummingbirds are fairly common here so are Be[illegible] Hummingbirds.
Returned to Oaxaca ~ 1200 - just missed hitting a burro on road near El Tule. Spent afternoon preparing specimens. Wrapped + packed one + 1/2 trays of birds for trip back.
Raining at 1700 + 2030. Dr. Charles Bogert of American Museum of Natural History told us this was an unusually wet summer.
Wrote notes + finished preparing to leave in the morning.
