LL Wolf 1963 Journal August 9 Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico They are very shy except for singing ♂♂ on exposed perches. Because of density of shrubs + small trees it is almost impossible to follow these birds as they forage. Found a pair which I watched for about 30 minutes. Searched for several hours for Aimophila notosticta. Found 2 or 3 singing ♂♂+ collected a juvenile which came in to "chase." Was unable to approach singing ♂♂ closer than 50 yards. John said he approached to 15-20 feet to one singing ♂. Down in stream below there are more paths thru vegetation making the approach easier & quieter. Obtained only the one few specimen. Also occurring here apparently in more open areas in scrub oak is Aimophila ruficeps. They are apparently absent from denser scrub oak which is habitat of A. notosticta + A. mysticalis. Began raining about 10:15 so returned to Oaxaca city with only 4 specimens. Spent afternoon preparing specimens + doing odd jobs around Oaxaca. Wrote notes + to bed.
