LLWSIF 1963 Journal August 8 cont'd. But then why does mysticlis rear? Into Oaxaca we encountered an agave tree forest - trees 10-12 feet tall + other species & shrubs. Unusual vegetation type. Stopped just north of Tamazulapan to collect Dwarf Vines. Saw a pin, but unable to shot one. Did get an Aechmolophus mexicanus. These two birds occur in tree lined stream canyons in otherwise arid, thorn-shrub grassland. Most of country from Tamazulapan to Oaxaca is eroded & cultivated. Pass three pine-oaks ~ 40 miles north of Ciudad Oaxaca. Just south of Tamazulapan saw hillsides looking like chaparral of California. This was probably scrub oak + may be habitat for Rinophila notosticta as it was a similar area where we collected it south of Ciedad Oaxaca in 1961. Arrived at Oaxaca Courts at 81930 & had supper. Wrote notes + to bed. August 9- Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico Up at 0445. Drove out to 4 mi. SW. Matatlan arriving at 0545. Still dark + cloudy. Birds just beginning to sing.
