our first on this trip. Bird was almost three postjuvenal molt
Prepare these two specimens after supper. Finished notes to
read,
August 8
7mi. s. Piaxtla, Puebla to Oaxaca, Oaxaca.
Up at 0545. Heard Hiraphila humeralis singing as made
breakfast so over to record. Also got some recordings
of the chatter call. John subsequently got recordings of
chatter duet. While John tried to collect R. humeralis
I watched a foraging pair near camp. After about an
hour discovered they had a juvenile hidden in brush.
Immediately got gun + tried to collect juv. Finally
collected 0, then 2, + juvenile. Juv. has just started
the postjuv. molt so is youngest specimen of this species
available. Shows faint streaks on brown chest band.
John came back with 11 birds + with 5 I collected
we started to prepare specimens. Collected another
singing ♂ humeralis at 1145. Finished birds by
1300 + packed car. Turned south on Pan American
Hwy. hoping to find camping spot near Acotala, Puebla.
No luck. As neared Oaxaca border we passed thru
a zone of scrub oak + other broad-leaved trees but
no legumes. My account for loss of humeralis.
