9 mi. SE. Zucande Matamoros to 7 mi. S. of Piastla Puebla
Up at 0600. Into field with sounds of Aimophila chattering from hillsides. Just up thorn woodland hillside from camp found a pair of Rusty Sparrows, singing. Pair of Varied Buntings became very excited as I approached patch of 2-3 foot shrubs. Was unable to find nest or young. At scrub attractor, a
Aimophila mystica flew into top of nearby 20 foot tree.
Immediately collected him + three foraging nearby in June.
On up hillside found several more pairs of mysticallis
+ one pair of Aimophila humeralis. Found a Common
Ground Dove from nest with one egg. Several pairs of
Nutting Flycatchers were foraging from exposed perches
in the legumes. Family group of Happy Warblers were
foraging in tangle of vines about 12 feet above ground
along bank of stream. Heard several more Rusty Sparrows
+ finally collected one. This seems rather odd habitat for
them. Mysticallis is the common sparrows on the
hillsides where we hoped to find humeralis.
Prepared specimens + 4 (408) Started SE along Pan Amer.
Hwy. Just south of Edwitzingo (8 miles) we took a gravel
road south to Piastla where we had to pay road upkeep
fee of 5 pesos (408). The road became almost impassible
in some spots. Finally just pulled off about 100 feet from
road + made camp on grassy knoll.
While I wrote notes John went into field. Came
