August 6 6 mi. N. Cuernavaca, Morelos to 9 mi. SE Izucar de Mataweros, Puebla
Up at 0545. Broke camp & had breakfast. Drove north to
epine-oak association where collected yesterday.
Dropped John here & I continued on N. of Tres Cambras
to bunch grass areas to collect Striped Sparrows.
Found groups of these birds, including some juveniles
+ laying ??. Also family groups of Mexican Juncos.
Red Cross Bails + Bl.-headed Seiskins flying overhead.
Back to pine-oak where collected a Catbamus occidentalis
+ a young Brown-throated Wren. Then was with an
adult.
Drove back toward Cuernavaca & prepared specimens. Had
lunch in Cuernavaca. Drove to Cuautla out of Cuernavaca.
Stopped about 11 miles E. of Cuernavaca to see if any
juvenile Aimophila ruficauda. None seen. Found A. humeralis
+ A. ruficauda in same area. Again humeralis was in
denser-almost closed canopy-vegetation while ruficauda
was in fence rows but could be flushed into denser
vegetation.
Most of land to Izucar de Mataweros from Cuernavaca
is cultivated. Did climb into some low hills in Puebla
where good thorn scrub vegetation, but no camping sites.
Bought few items in market in Mataweros then on
SE on Mx 190 toward Oracsa. Pitched camp on road
along stream . miles S. of Mataweros. Not a good camping
site. A. humeralis just singing & chattering at 1900.
