LLWulf 1963 Journal August 5 various localities N of Guanareaca, Marlos. Up at 0530 just as starting to get light. After breakfast John went out collecting while I tried to record + observe Reed Sparrrows. Not much success. Went out collecting for short time until ready to leave. Both car + drove several miles further North on Mex.95. Road climbs up to some good pine-oak that is just starting to be cut out. Spent until 1100 collecting here. Ipile or through-thelanus, Troglodytes brunnicollis, Pericadramus faevius, Catharus occidentalis, Hirio huttoni, Lepidocolaptes leucogaster all had fully grown young traveling with the adults. Catharus were still singing. Trails for lumbering make easy walking thru forest. In some places lumbering has been earlier + there are some patches of thick, shrubby second growth. Birds to same extent are in loose mixed flocks- Red Warbler, Olive Warbler, + Fox-throated Wren. Drove on into Distrito Federal about 1 mile where set up camp, had lunch + spent all afternoon preparing specimens. As we drove N. Striped Sparrows became common as soon as we found open bunch-grass meadows. About 6 PM drove west in vain from Tres Cumbres to Lagunas de Zapotala. Very nice country with small mountain lakes. -no camping places. Back to last night's camping area for supper with robes. Cloudy most of day with rain + wind much of afternoon - light rain about 4900.
