gun it broke again. Left gun with bellboy & drove to edge of town looking for road to Ixtlahuacan del Rio + the Barranca de Obotes. Sent on several wild goose chases - one on miserable road to town of Rio Blanco. Finally found by taking Avenida Alcade to north + then on Salida Saltillo which is just past a Normal School. This is road down into the barranca & up the other side to Zacatecas. Listened at various spots along road for 5-striped Sparrows, but heard none. Found pair of Rusty Sparrows on an open mesquite - the parkland hillside. Continued on three Ixtlahuacan to miserable road again. Drove thru farmland, oak woodland, & oak-junipers to spot where there was an impassable mud-hole. A farmer living nearby said we were about 30 kms. from Ployalme, Zacatecas, a Webster locality for 5-striped Sparrows.
Turned around started back toward Guadalajara.
Found 3 singing BOB Botteri Sparrows in sparsely wooded pasture land. Able to collect one.
Camped on road to Oaxaca 9.5 miles S of Ixtlahuacan. Looked thru mixed oak & juniper but rather dark as we pitched camp. Started to rain as we went to bed.
