July 28 Autlan, Jalisco to Guadalajara, Jalisco.
up at 0600. Beds t pillow very hard. Sky overcast + sun just coming up. Drove NE on Mex. 80. 8 miles out of town as we were descending from first climb into hills from valley heard Aimophila - like chatter. Proved to be A. humeralis. No place to park so continued on into valley where tried to collect Aimophila ruficauda while we had breakfast. Found several groups of birds + some apparently only in pairs. Collected four.
Drove back to spot where [illegible] saw Aimophila humeralis earlier (about 1 mile back toward Autlan). To observe + collect. Birds I saw earlier were a pair chattering low in bushes or rather open, grassy hillsede at edge of thicket vegetated (15+ feet tall) barranca. Found birds again - usually in groups of 3-5. Probably 3 or 4 such groups along about 1/4 mile of highway. Collected five plus three A. ruficauda + one Geococcyx velox. Started back for Guadalajara about 1000. Stopped in Juchitlan for gas - sold by a Tienda from 50 gallon drums.
Stopped a few miles NE. Tecolotlan, Jalisco for lunch. Nice oak woodland here with rather dense herb layer + shrub layers. Heard Catharus aurantiirostris + Thyrosthus senalace singing. Prepared specimens at edge of road.
Continued on at 1545 for Guadalajara. Just NE of Cotula we stopped to look at a White-tailed Hawk.
