July 26 Emi. SW La Huerta, Jalisco to 17 mi. NW Menzainillo, Colima
Up at 0600. Rained more during night. After breakfast
I went up hill to follow "finamon" call. As local farmers
told us it was the Banded Quail. I flushed a corey of
15-20 from dense second growth woods. Some were
in small openings on ground + others perched in
trees.
Spent until ~ 0800 observing Dimophila viridicauda. Then
John + I tried to collect the group around camp. Not
very successful. Chased some others + back to prepare
specimens. Finished specimens + had lunch. Broke
camp + took pictures of area. Much of area is being
farmed in corn. Rest is second growth woods, very dense,
approx. 10-20 feet tall with a few big trees along
the stream. Legumes are common + acacias especially
so along road. This seemed to be preferred locality
of D. viricauda.
Drove SW to coast + along coast to Mazuinillo.
Saw Brown Boobies in harbor along with Brown Pelicans,
Laughing Gulls + a large Tern. On toward Teerman.
Stopped along dry Viva bed about 3 mile south of
town. Collected a few. San Bles Jay from group of
three. Mosquitos are terrible so we headed back
to Mazuinillo + go NW along road we came in on.
(17 1/2 miles NW) a road goes to ocean at Playa de Oro.
