July 23 7mi. N. Tepic Nayarit to Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Rained hard + blew last night. Fortunately we had put up tarpaulin above tent. Remained cloudy all morning + looked like rain as we left about 1230. Spent early morning observing Botteri Sparrows. Mostly one bird - singing & breeding seems to be just starting here. Then tried to collect Botteri Sparrows + various other species.
Found a foraging family group of Basileuterus rufifrons - at least two young. Collected an adult + two young. They were foraging in 10+ foot trees spaced as if in an orchard - very sparse herb layer. Sinclair Ware also here.
Ground-chats were relatively common in fields, generally at edge in brush. I heard song sounding like a Yellow-throat which I attribute to this species. Saw several flight song performances by Ground-chats. -> in this fashion with song starting before push + ending before reaching new perch.
Broke camp + headed for Tepic. Tried to find Aimophila ruficauda in cultivated land around Tepic. Saw only one bird & was not able to collect it. This was on pastureland along a stone fence. Also Botteri Sparrows there.
