Journal
July 18 Drove to Culiacan & then took road southeast to
El Dorado. Most of way is irrigated agricultural land -
sugar cane + rice. Saw White & White faced Glossy
Ibis feeding in one field. Black-billed + Fulmaro
Tree Ducks flying over fields. Fulmaros in rocks
up to 8 - bl-bills mostly in pairs. Douglas Quail
flush along edge of road. Boat-tailed Grackle +
others ceteris very common. Could find no good
place to collect Rufous-winged Sparrows - most of
country cultivated + rest now partly flooded. Had to
turn back at El Dorado for Culiacan. Direct road
to highway damaged by rains.
Took motel room, had supper, wrote notes, & to bed.
July 19 Culiacan, Sinobos to Rancho Batel, 9 mi E. Santa Lucia.
Up at 8000. Drove south from Culiacan on h. 15 to Mazatlan.
Vegetation still remained although very green at this time
of years. Noted hummingbirds hovering above roadway north
of Elota. Hit one with car - was a young or Helioaster.
Not all were of this species.
At Mazatlan had car repaired - spark plugs + carburetor
cleaned. Finally left about 1300. Drove to just south of
Villa Union when turned east on Durango highway.
Winds across two foothill ranges before starting up into
Sierra. Got up into clouds & several hard downpours.
Arrived at El Palmito & found we had gone too far. Turned
