LH Welt 1963 Journal. July 15 Two shorebirds on mudflat - 1 Willet t) Great Blue Heron. Stopped 20 miles S. Guaymas in dense legume, cactus, totimo species thorn scrub hoping to find Rufous- winged Sparrows - no luck. All common avian associates were present (see species list) but Rufous-wings were not. I would guess that understory is too dense, not leaving enough bare, open ground to be good for Rufous-wings. Next stopped at Pitahaya - a locality where Dr Pitilka collected Rufous-wings. Area looks good but we heard some singing in lots of minutes. It was about 1200 (at these birds sing even in heat of day. Continued thru Ciudad Obregon - bought gas - south toward Sinaloa border. This after having lunch on banks of Rio Yaqui. River was down muddy. Some young boys said it would be several months before it had a lot of water. Saw a few tropical birds so collected here for about 1/2 hour. John got 3 Boat-tailed Grackles, 2 Tropical, t) Cassin Kingbird. I shot an imm. to happy when which came in to squeeking in dense undergrowth. Area along river has tall trees + fleers where undergrowth is fairly dense, but latter is being cleared out. South of Ciudad Obregon began hearing Rufous-wings again from open mesquite woods. Turned to west Carpalis habitat Carpalis habitat
