July 13 relatively recently began to grow. Probably rains have not been here long.
Returned to car & drove ~ 8 miles toward Mozotan
to find good shade to shin under. By 0800 it is hot + humid + field work is a real chore, especially chasing 5-stripes thru the thorny vegetation. Unfortunately,
there are no streams with water in which to take a bath.
Stopped at Km 01 along river bottom. Here as at other camps
the flies are terrible, but there is shade. Prepared specimens
+ had lunch. John twice went out to find Douglas
Quail. 2nd time was successful. About 1700 I went
out to collect a 5-stripe singing on hillside above
us. Managed to get 4, including our first female.
Prepared these birds, then drove back to Km 11/4 to
have supper + pitch camps. As growing dark it
became very cloudy & about [illegible] 2000 began raining.
Raining when we went to bed, but not very
hard. Hot + humid.
July 14 20mi. E. Mozotan to Guaymas, Sonora.
Up at 0515. After breakfast spent until 0915 up on
hillside observing 5-stripes. Have found best way
is to let them come to you so I actually have very
few minutes of observation for time spent. Saw more
foraging + a little pair behavior.
