K. Wolf 1963 27 Journal July 13 20 mi. E. Mazatan, Sonora, Mexico Up at 0530 after a sweltering humid night. After breakfast I went up into small gully above camp + watched (or tried to) Ampelito quinquenota foraging. Saw 2 periods of foraging. Near where I was watching a Common Ground Dove was feeding 2 partly feathered young. Nest, mostly of grass stems, was on nearly horizontal limb where branch had broken off. Adult would fly down to ground in sauce (10' diameter) bare patch(of shrub layer) then returns to nest 30 feet away. Approach nest by landing on limb above nest + walking to nest. Always seemed to squat down while on nest. Left at 0830 to try to collect some 5-stripes in areas away from this "study" area. Over song around the 600's an easy to find - usually on exposed perches in vegetation taller than general canopy. No ?'s were encountered. Varied Bunting, Blue Grosbeak, & Broad-billed Humming are common on the hillsides. Vegetation on hillsides often forms a closed canopy at 7-10 feet. Most of these trees are legumes. A few trees (white bark) project 30-40 feet up + stand as emergents. Understory is mostly young trees + an herb layer. Herb layer looks to be 5-stripes habitat.
